With one exception, the new Dacia Lodgy minivan that Euro NCAP said "budgets on safety" as it was rated with a mediocre three stars out of five, all other cars tested were awarded five stars.

Euro NCAP criticized the Renault Group's decision to not offer the electronic stability control (ESC) as standard equipment on the Lodgy, while also noting that the Dacia model scored poorly for pedestrian and child protection.

New Fiat 500XL with Seven Seats and 500L Trekking Minivans Revealed in Official Patent Drawings

We already knew that Fiat had plans to expand its 500L small minivan range but now we can give you a taste of what the Italian company is preparing for the very near future with these official patent fillings.

We found three different sets of sketches and renderings, the first of which, is the regular Fiat 500L with five seats that has already been unveiled and is set to reach European dealerships in late September and October (depending on the country) and in North America during the course of 2013.

The next model is easily identified as the seven-seater version of the small minivan, with some sources claiming that it will be named 500XL.

In order to create enough space for the addition of a third row of seats, most likely meant for children, this model is said to be around 150mm longer than the five-seat 500L. These renderings suggest that the 500XL has the same wheelbase as the 500L with the extra length going in the rear overhang.

After many failed attempts to gain at least some ground in the larger categories, the Fiat brand is refocusing its attention on the A-, B- and C-segments. At the Geneva Motor Show, the Italian company lifted the covers off a new model named the 500L, which in some way replaces the Idea.

Official: Fiat Unveils Larger and More Versatile 500L Ahead of its Geneva Debut

Fiat couldn't wait until the Geneva Motor Show to reveal its all-new 500L so it is giving us an early preview of its all-new sub-compact model. As you may have already guessed, the "L" in the name stands for "Large", with the 500L being the latest addition to the 500 range after the three-door hatch, the Cabrio and the Abarth models.

While the name and the styling (to some extent) refer to the 500 mini, the five-door 500L is based on the platform of the B-segment Punto measuring 4,140mm long, 1,780mm wide and 1,660mm tall. It is 594mm longer, 153mm wider and 175mm taller than the three-door 500.

The Italian company says the 500L offers "MPV passenger space combined with the feel of a small SUV on the road and the restrained dimensions and efficiency of a B segment car" and that it's an alternative to the traditional B and C segments.
