ABT Bids Farewell to VW Golf GTI Mk6 with Last Edition Special at Essen Motor Show

With the presentation of the VW Golf GTI Mk7 Concept alongside the regular Golf hatchbacks at the Paris Motor Show in September, it’s only a matter of time before we see the production ready model – as little as three months, if the Germans decide to show the car in Geneva, as we've heard.

To honor the departing model, German tuning brand of all things related to the VW Group, ABT Sportsline, introduced a "Last Edition" version of the current Golf GTI Mk6 at the Essen Motor Show, which runs until December 9.

Pfff…Ford Redoes 2013 Focus ST vs. VW Golf GTI Video, Takes Gittin Jr.'s Mustang Out of the Picture…

It has been almost two months since Ford published the third episode of its "Focus ST Sessions" web on August 29, only to remove the video a few hours later, without ever explaining why it did so.

Now we see that the Blue Oval has re-launched the clip under the new title "(Abandoned) Block Party", again featuring the Focus ST versus the VW Golf GTI Mk6 with professional drivers Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Jr. taking the wheel. Obviously, you will be wondering if Ford changed anything in the latest clip.

Meet Andrea and her VW Golf GTI V Club Sport Prepped by BBM Motorsport [w/Video]

When it comes to tuners and photo shoots with pretty ladies, 99.9 percent of the times, the girls are professional models who have nothing to do with the cars that they are posing together.

Nevertheless, there's always that one exception to the rule, which brings us to German aftermarket and racing tuner BBM Motorsport and Andrea Friedrich.

Apart from being a qualified real estate agent [sic] and having won the Miss Yamaha 2012 and Monster Energy Girl titles, the 23-year-old woman has also obtained an "A" racing license and will participate at events such as the Nürburgring-based VLN and GLP series.

2013 VW Golf GTI Study Officially Revealed in Paris, European Sales Begin Next Summer

Who are we kidding; it may be billed as a concept, but even VW doesn’t make much effort into hiding the fact that the "design study" that made its debut alongside the rest of the seventh-generation Golf models at the 2012 Paris Auto Show is actually the production version of the Mk7 Golf GTI .

The German automaker even released a launch date: the new Golf GTI in both three- and five-door body styles will go on sale in mainland Europe in early 2013 and in the UK next summer (no word yet on when it will arrive in North America).

The new GTI stands out from lesser versions of the Golf thanks to its honeycomb grille (first introduced in the Mk5) with double red-stipe accents, the smoked LED rear lights and license plate illumination, the red brake calipers behind the five-spoke alloy wheels and the 80 mm diameter tailpipes with a chrome finish.

2014 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk7 Design Study Breaks Cover Early

The first batch of photos of the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Concept were unloaded on the internet today, less than 24 hours ahead of the car's reveal at the 2012 edition of the Paris Motor Show.

Much like the previous model that was displayed in concept form at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the new Golf GTI is also going to be shown as a near-production study. What this means is that that the car's looks and mechanicals will remain virtually unchanged when it goes on sale next year starting with Europe in spring.

Volkswagen's new hot hatch incorporates all the traditional design cues of the series like the honeycomb upper and lower front grilles with red accents, which now extend to the angular headlamps, five spoke alloy wheels wrapped in beefy tires, and two large exhaust pipes split far.

The darkened tail lamps, rear diffuser in black, a discreet roof spoiler, the LED headlamps and the new black trim on the front bumper round out the visual changes on the outside.

Inside, you will find classic tartan upholstery covering the body-hugging sport seats along with black piano trim décor, and red stitching applied on the flat-bottom sports steering wheel and the transmission lever.

Volkswagen Abandons Appeal Against Suzuki and the Use of the GTi Moniker

The Volkswagen Group has put to rest an appeal of a court ruling in a brand infringement case against Suzuki regarding its use of the GTi nameplate on the sportiest version of the Swift hatchback – not because it wanted to, but evidently, because it had no chance of winning the case.

The dispute began back in 2004 when the German automaker challenged an application granted to Suzuki to use the GTi moniker and took the Japanese brand to court.

Volkswagen and the Seven Golfs: A Brief History of a 38-Year Old Icon

If there is one car that can be compared to the Porsche 911 for using the same recipe for close to four decades, it is the Volkswagen Golf.

In a way, this is ironic since the 911 was derided by its detractors as a “posh Beetle” while recently, the VW Group, which has a long history with Porsche, acquired the Stuttgart sports car maker.

One could not imagine two cars more different than each other as one is a 2+2 sports car with rear- or all-wheel drive and flat-six engines hung out behind the rear axle, while the other is a mass-market compact hatchback with the engine up front driving the front- or all four-wheels.

Nevertheless, despite the changes that come with each generation, the two models have one thing in common: they have adopted the path of careful evolution, not revolution, defining their respective segments and being the default buyers’ choice and the standard against which all newcomers are measured.

Ken Block and Vaughn Gittin Jr. Race it Out in 2013 Ford Focus ST and VW Golf GTI

For the third round of Ford's "Focus ST Sessions" web series, the Blue Oval called in professional rally driver Ken Block and Team Mustang drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. to compare the brand's new hot hatch against the current iteration of the car that gave birth to the category, the VW Golf GTI.

After winning a game of rock, paper, and scissors, Ken Block chose the 252hp Focus ST leaving Vaughn Gittin Jr. with the 200hp Golf GTI Mk6.

Spy Shots: 2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet Breaks Cover Without Any Camo

The last time we saw Volkswagen engineers testing the Golf R Cabriolet, they were trying out a prototype that used the GTI's body.

Now, our man with the long lens snagged a prototype wearing its production-ready body complete with the distinctive "R" style front bumper and alloy wheels, and even the "R" logos on the front grille and the lower part of the trunk.

With all the commotion and news going around about the regular versions of the seventh generation of the Volkswagen Golf that will premiere at the Paris Motor Show next month, it's easy to forget that the Germans are also working on several other variants including a flagship sports model with the 'R' moniker.

VW Shares First Details About the New 2013 Golf Mk7 Hatchback, will Show GTI Concept in Paris

Evidently, like Greenpeace, VW just can't wait to tell the world about its all-new Golf hatchback as prior to the car's media reveal at Berlin's museum of modern art on September 4 and its public debut at the Paris Motor Show later in the month, the German company decided to share some details with journalists this week.

While no photos were released, VW outlined the highlights of the seventh generation of the Golf hatchback that will go on sale in Europe this November with the rest of the world to follow shortly after.

As we have mentioned many times in the past, the Golf VII is based on the VW Group's brand new MQB platform shared with the also new 2013 Audi A3 and Seat Leon.

The new Golf measures 4,255mm (167.5-inches) in length, 1799mm (70.8-inches) in width and 1452mm (57.2-inches) in height, making it 56mm (2.2-in.) longer and 13mm (0.5-in.) wider but also 28mm (1.1-in.) lower than the current model. It also rides on a 59mm (2.3-in) longer wheelbase and wider front (8mm / 0.3-in.) and rear (6mm / 0.2-in) tracks.

We already know that the next generation and first truly new Golf since the Mk5 (upon which the current Mk6 is heavily based), will receive its public debut at the forthcoming Paris Motor Show at the end of September.

Spy Shots: Volkswagen Testing Golf R Cabriolet Prototype?

If the new Golf GTI Cabriolet has already gone sale in Europe, what could Volkswagen be possibly testing with this undisguised prototype model?

Well, we believe that what we are looking at here is a test car for the upcoming production Golf R Cabriolet that was previewed as a concept last year.

This prototype model features the same styling cues and parts as the GTI Cabriolet in all areas except for the larger and distinctly styled five-spoke alloy wheels and the much larger disc brakes up front (see the GTI's brakes in photo No18 here).

Spy Video: 2014 VW Golf GTI Put Through its Paces at the Nürburgring

We've snapped some new video footage of the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI on test in and around the Nürburgring race track in Germany.

The new GTI will appear in production trim about a year after the regular Golf Mk7's world premiere at the 2012 Paris Motor Show this September.

The spy pictures and videos suggest that the seventh generation model will continue the Mk5 and Mk6 aesthetics, albeit with some sharper styling details. The GTI will stand out from its lesser family members by the red accent trims, bespoke front and rear ends and alloy wheel designs.
