Pagani Huayra Roadster Design Concept Begs the Rhetorical Question, Should it be Built?

As a new and standalone company in the exotic and exclusive world of supercars, Pagani Automobili moves at a different tempo than other makers in this segment like Ferrari, which is supported by the Fiat Group, and Bugatti that lives under the umbrella of the almighty Volkswagen Group.

Since its inception in 1992, the Modena-based carmaker has introduced only two models; the Zonda and its derivatives in 1999, and its replacement, the still hard to pronounce, Huayra in 2011.

Evo Performance Car of the Year 2012: The Track Battle Video

When the year draws to its end, one thing you can be sure of is that you’ll be hearing, reading and watching a lot of “Car of the Year” memos. At some point, it really gets too much because everyone and their aunt think that they should crown a COTY.

It’s a free world, or most of it at least since there’s no North Korean COTY as far as we know, so everyone’s entitled to his/her opinion.

Even though the image below may look like it’s straight out of a D1 drift challenge, it’s actually a still from Evo magazine’s 2012 performance car of the year competition, or eCOTY as they call it.

The British publication rounded up the 10 best driver’s car that it has sampled in the past 12 months and it’s a pretty idiosyncratic bunch, ranging from the Morgan 3 Wheeler to the mighty Pagani Huayra.

Purple Carbon Pagani Huayra with Gold Rims Won't go by Unnoticed

It’s safe to say that nine of out 10 people will get the Pagani Huayra's name wrong (include us in that group), but few if any will mistake it for anything else on the road today.

As impressive as it may be, there are some ways to make the Huayra stand out even more from the crowd, namely by individualizing the car's appearance.

Journo Takes a Pagani Huayra for a Tire-Burning Spin on a Twisty Road

Not that we need an excuse to show you another video of Horacio Pagani's V12-powered monster, but truth to be said, it's not often that you see a very, very expensive and exotic supercar like the Huayra being thrashed around a public road by someone other than its owner or if it's a press car, a company test driver.

In this case, said driver happened to be a Greek journalist from Drive Magazine who had the rather unique opportunity of jumping behind the wheel of the $1.4 million Huayra without having someone (as in a company official) taking the passenger seat to observe him.

Huayra! Watch Pagani's Chief Test Driver in Some Rocking Action

If there is one person in the world you would like to take you out for a spin in the new Huayra, or any other Pagani model for that matter, it's Davide Testi, the Italian firm's official test driver who has racked up more miles in the car than anyone else has.

A one John Jack had the privilege of seeing Testi manhandling [sic] the exotic supercar from the relative comfort of the passenger seat during a trip in Italy and was also kind enough to share the experience with the rest of us through a video that you can enjoy right past the break.

The Uninspiring Silence of an Audi R8 e-Tron vs The Screaming Sounds of a Pagani Zonda R at the 'Ring

Call us old fashion, but we believe that a sports car has to arouse all your senses with its acceleration, speed, handling, looks and of course, sounds.

The Audi R8 is by all means a sharp looking and handling automobile that will likely be fast even in e-tron guise, which is Audi talk for its pure-electric powertrain that uses two electric motors on each axle.

Larger-Than-Life Pagani Meeting with Eleven Zondas and One Huayra

With only a handful of Pagani cars being hand built every year since the founding of the company in the 1990s, any meeting of two or more models of the Modena-based automaker is something worth talking about.

Now, seeing eleven Pagani Zondas and one Huayra gather at the same place at the same time is nothing less of extraordinary.

Do we need to say more to convince you to hop over the break to watch the two videos from the Pagani owners meet in Italy?

Pagani's 720hp Huayra Exotic Squeaks and Creaks Like a Mouse During EVO Test Drive

It's one of the rarest and most expensive production supercars in the world with only about 40 examples, priced at €845,000 (US$1.04 million) excluding taxes a piece, to be built each year.

The new Pagani Huayra might have come to life at last year's Geneva Motor Show, but to date, very few people have sat in it, let alone test drive it.

Pagani Video Documents the Development and the Birth of the New Huayra

Among the very few new supercar brands that have successfully managed to challenge the establishment and the likes of traditional sports car builders such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bugatti, is Pagani Automobile.

The company that was founded in San Cesario sul Panaro, near Modena in Italy, in 1992 by Horacio Pagani, launched its first model, the V12-powered Zonda, to critical acclaim in 1999.

The Zonda remained in production until 2011 when Pagani presented it's second model, the Huayra at last year's Geneva Motor Show.

In the video documentary that follows after the jump, you can watch how the Huayra came to be and what it takes to build one.

New Pagani Huayra Carbon Edition Dazzles the Crowds at the Geneva Motor Show

Horacio Pagani’s outfit may only have a single model at any given time at its line-up but in the case of the Zonda, he surely rolled out one special edition of the supercar after another (the Tricolore, Cinque, R, F etc.) until we almost lost count.

Exactly one year after launching the Zonda’s replacement, Pagani has already readied the Huayra’s first special edition version that was introduced to the world today at the Geneva Motor Show.

You can check out the video after the break.
